Sculpture by the Sea is an outdoor sculpture exhibit installed annually along the Bondi to Tamarama cliff top walk, in Sydney, Australia. It’s a feast for the eyes with great art set against a stunning scenery; what more could one ask for?!
I’ve not yet seen this year’s Sculpture by the Sea is but I try to make it annually, hopefully this weekend, before it closes. For now, let me share the work of one of my favourite sculptors from the past few years. His work displays a common theme of reflection, meditation and travelling life’s journey.

They’re amazing ! Whatare they made of ? Blends so beautifully with the rocks in the background…
They are quite intriguing, Grace. They are made of cast iron and steel. Their rusty colours does sit well in the scenery, especially when the sky and ocean are really blue. I hope he’s on display again this year.

It’s hard to see but how big are they? They look fairly big! Would’ve taken ages to make!
Hi Penny. They are all about 1.5 metres tall. The actual little person is probably about 30cm tall.
great shots! happy ww 🙂
Thank you, Tina!
Stunning sculptures, there is an annual sculpture by the sea festival near us too, I always try and go
I wonder if this yours is related to this one, Kate. They also run one in Clottesloe, WA. The other one is run in Aarhus, Denmark. I’m sure that’s not the one! There is just something so interesting about seeing the art outdoors, especially when someone has been particularly creative and used the setting as part of their installation.
Fabulous sculptures xx
Thanks, Sonia.
Awesome sculptures. Love your photos!
Thanks, Amy. I’m pretty partial to his style of art. Thanks for visiting.
That is so impressive. Love it! I’d love to know how big it is too. 🙂
Thanks, Kel. The sculptures are all about 1.5 metres tall. The actual little person is probably about 30cm tall.
Oh Veronica – this is one of the things I want to do most in Australia.
One day…
Well, Ally, it’s on annually during the start of November. You can start planning in advance for a holiday here next November! Unless you might prefer a holiday in Europe; the same mob runs one in Aarhus, Denmark. If logistics were all just about picking a preferable destination, you might have a tough choice! 🙂
yay I saw a few posts on Sculptures by the sea and it’s such a brilliant event! Wish they had something like that here too..

You know, Ai, in many ways Singapore would be a perfect spot for such an exhibition. It’s a pity they don’t have something quite like that. Maybe they view the art and sculptures in various parts of the island sufficient for that purpose.
Oh very interesting works of art.
Thanks, Tamara. His work is always one of my favourites each year.
I totally love this idea of having art by the sea. I just wish I could check out some in person but love being able to see it online. N x
That’s the wonderful thing about the net, Naomi; you can experience it without leaving your home. I realise it’s not quite the same thing but you still get a taste. You can let your imagination do the rest!
Very intriguing…and peaceful at the same time.
Thanks, Maria. These sculptures are both those things exactly! If you liked those, you may be interested in more of his work from Brenda May Gallery – http://www.brendamaygallery.com.au/pages/artists_works.php?artistID=79.
I used to always loving catching Sculptures by the Sea when I lived in Sydney. A seaside walk with a bit of artistic enjoyment was always a welcome escape.
It is quite lovely, Shelly. Lovlier to visit on a weekday too. Alas, the weekend is all I have left. We are attempting it tomorrow with the two little ones in tow!
I didn’t realise it was closing already, it seems like it only just opened. I’ll have to make time to visit, too!
I know, Tat. This weekend is it for 2011. We are attempting our dash tomorrow since Sunday might rain. Sadly, both days are going to be hot. Ah well, wish us luck with two littlies in tow!
i remember these sculptures from years back when i was living in sydney. they are all so wonderful!
They surely are, Tahlia. I enjoy the creativity of the exhibition and additional chance to exercise but it’s not quite so easy with two little ones in tow.
They are like someone has let you into a strange dream. Love the rusted metal.
They are, Laney! I find I get all contemplative just looking at them. Some of his other works are called “A Journey’s Beginning”, “On a Higher Plane”, “Reflection on the Journey”, “Memories of Times Past”…….you get the drift.
Hope you get to go. I went this year after missing the last eight years or so…. was very good. I enjoyed seeing the work of one guy over time.
Thanks, Seana. We intend to brave the weather and the crowds this weekend before it closes. I do enjoy it though it’s more of a challenge bringing the kiddies. We just have to plan differently. I do like how there are a few who exhibit every year and it is interesting to see the progression and change in themes. Well, I’ll find out more tomorrow!
